PRIVATE LESSONS
Rob is now accepting students for private drum lessons via Skype
Since the early ‘90’s, Rob has taught all types of drumming to students of various ages and interests. Having been in gigging bands for 30 years as well as having over 25 years of recording experience, Rob loves to share his insight and experience with his fellow drummers.
Lessons are 1 hour & cover such topics as:
learning your favorite songs
snare drum rudiments
drum set playing
playing to a click track
reading music
tuning and set up suggestions
advice for live and recording situations
playing with dynamics
playing for the song
the importance of being able to relate to and get along with other musicians
networking yourself
setting goals
the importance of learning other instruments
being prepared when your big chance comes your way
Other than Rob’s basic structure, it is up to the student how the lesson goes – it can be all drumming, or part discussion/consulting and part playing.
Rob’s own drumming education started at the age of 7, studying at Rochester, N.Y.’s Hochstein School of Music under famous Chuck Mangione drummer Vinnie Ruggiero. From there Rob also studied at the world famous Eastman School of Music during his high school years, and was a Music Education major at Nazareth College. Along the way, in addition to studying percussion, Rob studied music history, music theory, and performed in concert bands and percussion ensembles from grammar school through college. Rob also took guitar lessons for many years during his teens, often going out of a guitar lesson in one room and right into another room for a drum lesson.
Rob loves to interact with people when it comes to music and drumming, and it gives him great joy to share what he knows to people who share the same enthusiasm and passion as him. He also views teaching as a learning experience for himself, since students can also introduce him to music and ideas he may not have been aware of himself. He believes that students need to first know the rules in order to break them, using their foundation as a basis to then be themselves and not be a clone of their idol or someone else. In other words, learn all you can from your musical heroes as your foundation, but use bits and pieces of them to mold it into your own unique style. As musicians, to get gigs we are selling ourselves and our uniqueness – that’s Rob’s main belief – focus on your own strengths and be the best “you” you can be.
